Varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency can affect more than the appearance of the legs. When damaged valves allow blood to pool, patients may experience swelling, heaviness, aching, burning, itching, cramping, or skin discoloration that becomes more noticeable later in the day.
Saginaw had an estimated 26,706 residents in 2025, including approximately 20,136 adults. Using published adult prevalence estimates, about 4,833 Saginaw adults may have visible varicose veins and roughly 1,208 may show evidence of advanced chronic venous disease.

Leg swelling and heaviness can have more than one possible cause. Texas Vein Experts begins with a medical history, physical examination, and vascular ultrasound when appropriate to determine whether venous reflux is present before recommending a vein procedure.
If a larger superficial vein is refluxing, ClosureFast radiofrequency ablation or VenaSeal may be used to close the unhealthy vein. Microfoam or compounded sclerotherapy can be appropriate for selected smaller varicose veins and spider veins.
By treating the vein responsible for abnormal blood flow, the goal is to reduce venous pressure and provide long-term improvement in symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, aching, and fatigue.

Varicose vein symptoms may include aching, swelling, heaviness, burning, itching, nighttime cramps, restless legs, fatigue, skin discoloration, and raised or twisted veins.
Varicose veins are not always dangerous, but untreated venous disease can progress and contribute to inflammation, bleeding, skin changes, or slow-healing ulcers. Persistent symptoms should be evaluated.
Recurring swelling, especially when it occurs with pain, heaviness, visible veins, skin discoloration, or sores, deserves medical evaluation. Sudden swelling or significant new pain may require prompt care to rule out other conditions.
Compression can reduce swelling and heaviness while it is worn and may be part of conservative care. It does not repair a damaged vein valve or permanently eliminate venous reflux.
A vein specialist reviews symptoms and medical history and may use duplex ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and identify valves that allow blood to move backward.
Most minimally invasive treatments involve little to no downtime, and many patients return to normal activities the same day. Recovery instructions depend on the procedure and individual medical needs.
