Chronic venous insufficiency develops when valves in the leg veins stop moving blood efficiently upward. The resulting reflux can contribute to enlarged varicose veins, recurring swelling, aching, heaviness, cramping, itching, or skin changes. Symptoms can exist even when a large surface vein is not obvious.
Wylie has an estimated 63,842 residents, including approximately 46,222 adults. Applying published national adult prevalence estimates suggests that about 11,093 adults may have visible varicose veins and roughly 2,773 may show evidence of advanced chronic venous disease.

Pregnancy can increase blood volume and pressure in the veins of the pelvis and legs, while hormonal changes can relax vein walls. Some pregnancy-related veins improve after delivery, while others remain and may need evaluation.
Duplex ultrasound shows how blood is moving through the leg veins and can identify valves that are allowing blood to flow backward. This helps the doctor treat the source of abnormal circulation.
