Varicose veins can be a visible sign of abnormal blood flow in the leg veins. When reflux continues over time, some patients also develop recurring swelling, aching, heaviness, itching, skin changes, or other symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency.
Azle has an estimated 15,365 residents, including approximately 11,263 adults. Based on published U.S. adult prevalence estimates, roughly 2,703 Azle adults may have visible varicose veins and about 676 may show evidence of more advanced chronic venous disease.

Varicose veins commonly form when one-way valves inside the leg veins weaken and allow blood to flow backward. Genetics, age, pregnancy, excess weight, and long periods of sitting or standing can increase the likelihood of developing them.
Varicose veins cannot always be prevented, especially when genetics or age play a role. Regular movement, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding long uninterrupted periods of sitting or standing, and using compression when recommended may help reduce venous pressure.
Varicose veins caused by damaged valves generally do not permanently disappear on their own. Elevation, movement, and compression may improve symptoms, but they do not repair the valve that is allowing blood to flow backward.
Spider veins are smaller vessels near the skin and often appear as red, blue, or purple lines. Varicose veins are larger and may bulge or twist. Varicose veins are more likely to be associated with aching, swelling, heaviness, or venous reflux.
Duplex ultrasound evaluates blood flow and shows whether valves are closing properly. It helps the vein doctor determine whether visible veins or symptoms are being driven by a deeper refluxing vein that should be treated first.
Many minimally invasive vein procedures require little to no downtime, and most patients return to normal day-to-day activities after treatment. The care team provides specific instructions based on the procedure performed.
