Varicose veins often form when weakened vein valves allow blood to move backward and increase pressure in the legs. The result can be visible enlarged veins, but it can also include swelling, aching, heaviness, itching, cramps, or tired legs that become more noticeable after a long day.

Once an unhealthy vein is closed, blood redirects through healthier pathways. The goal is to reduce abnormal venous pressure, improve symptoms when reflux is the cause, and address visible veins with a plan based on diagnosis. Varicose veins commonly develop when one-way valves inside the leg veins weaken and allow blood to flow backward. Genetics, age, pregnancy, excess weight, and prolonged sitting or standing can increase risk.
Long periods of sitting can reduce normal calf-muscle movement and may make existing swelling, aching, or heaviness more noticeable. Sitting alone does not diagnose vein disease, so persistent symptoms should be evaluated.
Varicose veins caused by damaged valves generally do not permanently disappear on their own. Movement, elevation, or compression may improve symptoms, but the underlying reflux can remain.
Compounded sclerotherapy is commonly used for selected spider veins. When spider veins appear with swelling, aching, heaviness, or larger varicose veins, ultrasound may be recommended to check for deeper venous reflux.
There is no single best procedure for every patient. Treatment depends on symptoms, vein anatomy, ultrasound findings, medical history, and the specific veins involved.
