Varicose veins can develop when unhealthy valves allow blood to pool instead of moving efficiently back toward the heart. Over time, the increased venous pressure can contribute to swelling, aching, heaviness, itching, cramps, skin discoloration, and enlarged surface veins.

Compression socks may reduce symptoms while they are worn, but they do not repair a damaged valve or permanently close a refluxing vein.
Compounded sclerotherapy can be used for selected spider veins. If spider veins occur with medical symptoms or larger varicose veins, an evaluation may be recommended before surface treatment.
Duplex ultrasound is noninvasive and uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow. It can show whether valves are closing correctly and identify veins that may be contributing to symptoms.
