Varicose veins cannot always be prevented, especially when genetics, age, or pregnancy increase risk. Regular movement, weight management, avoiding long uninterrupted periods of sitting or standing, and compression when recommended may help reduce venous pressure.
Long periods of sitting can reduce normal calf-muscle movement and may make vein symptoms more noticeable, but varicose veins usually involve several risk factors, including genetics, age, pregnancy, weight, and vein-valve function.
Varicose veins caused by damaged valves generally do not permanently disappear on their own. Movement, elevation, and compression may reduce symptoms, but the underlying venous reflux can remain.
