Varicose veins can develop when one-way valves inside the leg veins weaken and allow blood to flow backward. That reflux increases venous pressure and can contribute to bulging veins, recurring ankle swelling, aching, heaviness, itching, skin discoloration, and more advanced chronic venous disease in some patients.
