Varicose veins can be more than a cosmetic concern. Damaged valves may allow blood to pool inside superficial veins, contributing to swelling, aching, heaviness, burning, itching, cramping, skin discoloration, or raised veins. When symptoms persist or progress, a medical vein evaluation can determine whether venous reflux is involved.

Symptoms can include aching, swelling, heaviness, cramping, burning, itching, restless legs, leg fatigue, skin discoloration, and visible varicose veins. Some patients have symptoms even when a large bulging vein is not obvious.
Persistent pain, swelling, bleeding, inflammation, skin discoloration, or sores near the ankle deserve medical evaluation. Sudden significant swelling or new severe leg pain may require prompt medical care to rule out other causes.
Compression stockings may reduce swelling, aching, and heaviness while they are worn. They can support symptom management, but they do not repair a damaged valve or permanently close a refluxing vein.
Duplex ultrasound evaluates blood flow and can identify valves that allow blood to move backward. It helps determine whether visible veins or recurring symptoms are connected to a deeper refluxing vein.
Spider veins are smaller red, blue, or purple vessels close to the skin. Varicose veins are larger and may twist or bulge. Larger varicose veins are more often associated with swelling, aching, heaviness, or venous reflux.
