Not every vein problem begins with a large, twisted vein. Some patients first notice ankle swelling, nighttime cramps, burning, itching, or legs that feel unusually tired. Varicose veins are enlarged surface veins, but the condition can be part of a deeper circulation problem known as venous insufficiency. When one-way vein valves weaken, blood can move backward and increase pressure in the lower legs, contributing to swelling, aching, heaviness, cramping, itching, or skin changes.
Joshua has an estimated 9,352 residents, including approximately 6,668 adults. Applying published national adult prevalence estimates suggests that roughly 1,600 adults may have visible varicose veins and about 400 may show evidence of more advanced chronic venous disease. These figures are population estimates, not diagnosed Joshua patients.
Joshua also has a meaningful older adult population, with about 16.3% of residents age 65 or older. Age is one of several factors associated with vein problems, which makes access to evaluation important when symptoms persist or visible veins begin changing.
Joshua combines a close-knit community with everyday travel along SH 174 and FM 917. When vein symptoms interfere with walking, exercise, family activities, or time on your feet, minimally invasive care can offer a practical path forward without the recovery associated with traditional surgery.
Joshua patients may arrive with very different concerns, from thin spider veins to painful bulging varicose veins or recurring swelling. A duplex ultrasound can show whether a larger vein is refluxing and creating pressure below the surface.
If reflux is present, treatments such as ClosureFast radiofrequency ablation, VenaSeal, or Varithena may be recommended depending on the vein. Compounded sclerotherapy can be used for selected smaller varicose veins and spider veins. The goal is to treat the source of the problem, not simply the most visible vein.
Most treatments are performed in the office with little downtime. Depending on the procedure, patients can often resume regular activities the same day or within a short period while following their provider’s aftercare instructions.

Varicose veins commonly develop when one-way valves inside the leg veins weaken and allow blood to flow backward. Genetics, age, pregnancy, excess weight, and prolonged sitting or standing can increase risk.
Varicose veins caused by damaged valves generally do not disappear permanently on their own. Movement, elevation, and compression may improve symptoms, but they do not repair the underlying valve problem.
Spider veins are smaller vessels near the skin and often appear as red, blue, or purple lines. Varicose veins are larger, may bulge or twist, and can be associated with aching, swelling, heaviness, or cramping.
Treatment can include ClosureFast radiofrequency ablation, VenaSeal, Varithena, sclerotherapy, or another minimally invasive approach. The appropriate option depends on symptoms, vein anatomy, and ultrasound findings.
Spider veins are often cosmetic, but patients who also have swelling, aching, skin changes, or larger varicose veins may benefit from evaluation for underlying venous insufficiency.
A vascular or duplex ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow through the leg veins. It can identify venous reflux and help the vein specialist determine which veins may need treatment.
Recovery depends on the procedure, but many treatments require little downtime and allow patients to return to normal day-to-day activities quickly. Your provider will give specific instructions for your procedure.
