Chronic venous insufficiency can develop when leg-vein valves no longer close effectively and blood moves backward. Over time, the added pressure may contribute to swelling, aching, heaviness, cramping, itching, skin changes, or prominent varicose veins.

Varicose veins commonly develop when one-way valves inside the leg veins weaken and allow blood to flow backward. Genetics, age, pregnancy, excess weight, and prolonged sitting or standing can increase risk.
