Spider veins are smaller red, blue, or purple vessels close to the skin. Varicose veins are larger, twisted or bulging veins that may be associated with aching, swelling, heaviness, cramping, or skin changes.
Compounded sclerotherapy is commonly used for selected spider veins. A medical solution is injected into the vein so it closes and gradually fades. When symptoms suggest deeper reflux, ultrasound may be recommended before surface treatment.
Most spider veins are primarily a surface or cosmetic concern. An evaluation becomes more important when they appear with swelling, pain, heaviness, skin changes, or larger varicose veins.
Persistent pain, swelling, bleeding, inflammation, skin discoloration, or sores near the ankle deserve medical evaluation. Sudden significant swelling or new severe leg pain may require prompt medical care to rule out other causes.
Duplex ultrasound evaluates blood flow and can identify valves that are not closing correctly. It helps determine whether visible veins or recurring symptoms are connected to a deeper refluxing vein.
